Album Review: Robert Brashear, Songs Vol. 2: 2020

Album Review:
Robert Brashear, Songs Vol. 2: 2020
Self-release

The dichotomy of Robert Brashear’s album ‘Songs Vol. 2’ is that it sounds like a country music album singing very liberal protest songs. The songs touch on Black Lives Matter, anti Trump administration topics, world peace etc. I am not saying that country music is always right wing but when you hear a song with lyrics such as “for the second time this week I hear the sound of marching feet, Flowing down the street outside my window, Black Lives Matter peaceful protest I hear the sound resound, no justice no peace”, set to a twangy country rock feel, its really a fun contrast. The 5 song album has catchy and very powerful songs about subjects dear to my heart, with well produced and performed music. Brashear’s voice is distinct and has a Bob Dylan like feel to it, which makes more sense for the lyrics he is singing. The music behind the voice could for sure accompany lyrics that deal with trucks, broken hearts, flying the flag and how one loves me some Merika. But they deal with topics one might hear in conscientious hip-hop and  hippie folk music. I really enjoyed this combination.
